Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan Gelang Patah (SMKGP) has a rich history that spans over five decades, making it a significant educational institution in its region. Established in January 1966, the school began its journey in three separate buildings at Sekolah Jenis Kebangsaan (C) Ming Terk. It started with 224 students, 184 of whom were Malay-medium students, and 40 were English-medium students.
Over the years, SMKGP has seen remarkable growth and development. In 1969, it moved to its current location, initially consisting of two blocks, A and B. The school’s facilities were gradually expanded to accommodate its increasing student population. In 1975, Block C was added, and by 1980, a twin-house building was erected. In 1988, the school took over its own administration, and its campus expanded to 12 acres.
Throughout the 1990s, the school saw substantial infrastructure development. Blocks D and E were constructed, along with a multipurpose court, Kemahiran Hidup workshop modification, and the construction of a Grand Hall. By the end of 1998, a four-story building and an agricultural workshop were also in progress.
By 2010, SMKGP had 90 dedicated teachers, 16 non-teaching staff members, and an impressive student body of 1,300, demonstrating its commitment to providing quality education. In 2016, the school celebrated its 50th anniversary, marking a half-century of shaping young minds and preparing students for a brighter future.
