Sungai Petani was upgraded to the Majlis Perbandaran on 2 July 1994 equivalent to 22 Muharram 1415H and this declaration was completed by YAB Tan Seri Dato ‘Seri Haji Osman bin Haji Aroff, PSM., SSDK., DHMS., JMN., JP – Menteri Besar of Kedah Darul Aman.
Majlis Perbandaran Sungai Petani Kedah (MPSPK) is fully responsible for development control, licensing, planning, provision of infrastructure facilities and so on to ensure the progress of urban development and the prosperity of the people of Sungai Petani and Kuala Muda in general.
