The Penang Regional Development Authority (PERDA) was established on June 1, 1983 under the Penang Regional Development Authority Act 282. The history of PERDA’s establishment began with a proposal by the Cabinet to establish the Penang Agricultural Development Authority (PADA) on March 3, 1982. Then, on December 1, 1982, a Cabinet paper was prepared to establish the Penang Regional Development Authority (PERDA). On December 10, 1982, the PERDA Establishment Bill was presented and approved in Parliament as Act 282. The Act was gazetted on March 10, 1983. The appointment of the first Board of Directors by Dato’ Rais Yatim, the Minister of Land and Regional Development, was made on June 1, 1983. The first Board meeting was held on July 21, 1983. The PERDA area was subsequently gazetted on October 21, 1988, with effect from June 1, 1983. On October 27, 1990, PERDA was transferred from the Ministry of Land and Regional Development to the Ministry of Rural Development, which was later known as the Ministry of Rural and Regional Development. Effective August 15, 2005, PERDA was placed under the administration of the Implementation Coordination Unit, Prime Minister’s Department (ICU JPM).
